Voltaigo GmbH has commenced construction of the largest project in the company’s history since its founding. A 3.4 MWp ground-mounted photovoltaic plant with an east-west orientation, combined with a battery storage system with a capacity of nearly 9 MWh, is being developed on a site covering approximately 5 hectares.
The facility is located in the municipality of Kotaj in the Szabolcs-Szatmár-Bereg region in eastern Hungary. More than 6,500 photovoltaic modules will be installed, generating approximately 3.8 million kWh of electricity annually. This corresponds to the average yearly electricity consumption of around 1,000 households.
“The project is being realized entirely without public subsidies,” says Stefan Scheibl, Managing Director (Commercial) of Voltaigo GmbH. “The system is designed so that the photovoltaic plant can either feed electricity directly into the public grid or charge the battery storage system. The stored energy is then fed back into the grid at a later time – precisely when it is needed or when market prices are most attractive. This allows the project to achieve economic viability through market-based revenues.”
The battery storage system will also be charged from the public grid during periods of low electricity prices and will be operated in a grid-supportive manner. The system is being accredited for participation in the Hungarian ancillary services market, thereby actively contributing to grid stability. As a system-supporting asset, the battery will participate in the commercialization of balancing markets including FCR (Frequency Containment Reserve), aFRR (Automatic Frequency Restoration Reserve), and mFRR (Manual Frequency Restoration Reserve).
As part of the project, voltaigo is responsible for the full project development, technical engineering, and construction supervision, and is also participating as an investor.
“The development of the project in its current configuration, including the integrated battery storage system, has taken several years. We are therefore particularly pleased that construction has now begun and that we expect to connect the plant to the grid in the near future,” says Andreas Feichtinger, Managing Director of voltaigo GmbH.
